Reading and Phonics
Children in Nursery are taught early phonics through letters and sounds. This progresses onto the Read Write Inc. synthetic phonics scheme in Reception and into Key Stage 1. This is taught daily in small groups with a teacher or teaching assistant. All of the children are assessed using the Read Write Inc assessment which will determine which group they will work in. Children use the RWI reading books during class sessions and for home reading.
Additionally, children also take home another reading book which can be changed daily. These books are from a variety of reading schemessuch as Bug Club, Phonics Bug, Read Write Inc. and Oxford Reading Tree. The children follow a banded system which is matched to their reading level. Each child has a reading diary/homework record which is personalised to their Key Stage. We encourage parents to hear their children read every night and to record comments in their childs diary.
