Art

'Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.' - Art and Design Programmes of Study 2013

At Shrewsbury Cathedral Catholic Primary School and Nursery, we aim to ensure that all pupils leave primary school with:

  • The knowledge and skill set to produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences. We believe the art curriculum will help students become more resourceful and will provide them with a unique way of understanding and responding to the world around them.

  • Proficient experience in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques creating meaningful learning experiences that celebrate and appreciate our diversity within school and our local community.

  • The opportunity to evaluate and analyse a range of creative works using the language of art, craft and design.

  • Knowledge and interest in great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

  • The knowledge that there are a range of possible job and future careers within the art industry that our students can engage with throughout their future with passion and interest.
